Getting a new car can be an amazing feeling. It gives the
owner with a sense of accomplishment. Cars are really helpful as they help you
get from point A to point B faster and with ease. They are convenient when going
for grocery shopping , packing the heavy items in the boot and then driving
off without breaking a sweat. They help
us when we need to go out with friends and family to places we love nicely
packed together. Cars provide comfortable travel and protect the owners from
weather conditions such as the rain they would encounter if they were
travelling by foot. So what does one need to consider when getting a new car?
Not every car is for everyone. I have drafted some points to consider when
getting a car
Utility
What use is the car is going to be? For example if one is a
mechanic or farmer or carpenter and wants to occasionally carry their work
tools along a truck will be the perfect fit. However if a family is starting
out and need a car they can all fit in when taking their 3 kids to school then
a minivan will be ideal. It is important to establish this fact prior to
getting a car
Mileage
If you are getting a new car you don’t have to worry about
this. However, if you getting a pre-owned vehicle you need to check the mileage
of the vehicle as it reflects on the engine lifespan. A higher mileage suggests
that the car engine has done a lot of work and might need servicing in the near
future.
Engine Type
Some cars are electric; others are run on petrol, others diesel
and others are hybrid which run on both fuel and electricity, Depending on your
needs and preferences the engine type needs to be considered as it will
determine the cost per gallon of fuel you will have to pay.
Engine Capacity
This determines how much fuel the car consumes per unit distance
and can help you calculate if you can take up the cost. Some vehicles are fuel
savers and others not so much. This will also help gauge if the car is ideal
for everyday drive to the work or its better suited for the highway long
distances from state to state.
Price
The price of the vehicle you want to purchase must be in
tandem with the vehicle type and market trends. Try and get a quote of the same
vehicle from different dealers factoring in mileage into your decision making
if the car was preowned. Also check if you cannot get a better vehicle model
for the the same amount of money at a different dealership.
Condition
Establish the vehicle condition. Try and inspect right round
the vehicle before you buy. Check the rear view mirrors, check the exhaust,
check the condition of the interior and check the engine for any leaks. Start
the vehicle and request for a test drive to get a feel of how it handles on the
road.
Maintenance Cost
Some vehicles have a higher maintenance cost than others,
due diligence is required to check whether one can afford to maintain the
vehicle by regularly sending it for servicing. A well serviced vehicle is
roadworthy.
Location
When getting a car, check if the dealer can deliver it
straight to you without additional cost or not. Calculate the cost of shipping
and taxes into the overall price of the vehicle to see if it’s a great
purchase.
Availability of Spare Parts
Spare parts for the vehicle have to be readily available in
the event that your car needs a replacement. There is nothing boring as parking
a car in your garage for 6 months because you can’t find the part locally and
have to wait till it’s shipped to you. During the period the vehicle is idle it
may end up developing multiple faults.
Safety Features
This is an important feature not to overlook when getting a
car. Check if it has airbags, an anti-lock braking system (Abs) and all other
cool safety features that protect the passengers in the event of an accident.
Entertainment Features
Check if the car has a good radio or DVD player, Bluetooth
hands-free option for answering calls whilst driving and any other
entertainment features that you desire.
Getting a new car is a great task and the points above
should help you make a solid decision on your next purchase. Happy driving and
stay safe.
