The lifestyle of the future will be very different from what
we currently see. With rapid advances in all facets of science and technology,
there are things that future generations
will take for granted. Think of it this way, there was a time in our lives when
we had payphones and call booths. People would often times buy credit that came
in the form of magnetic stripe cards. When
one wanted to make a call, they would first swipe their card then dial in their
number of choice. This was all normal and society embraced it. I am sure during
that time it made sense, it was innovation and convenience by the telecom
companies. Then came the era of the mobile phone, wiping out the payphones. It
was innovative and convenient again as one did not have to memorize phone
numbers or diarize them anymore. You would just look up the contact, select it,
press call and wait to connect. With the example I have just given, there is a
high chance that more lifestyle changes will be witnessed as we move into the
future. Let us take a look at some of the areas that are likely to alter our
lifestyles.
Transportation
This is one area that
is set to dramatically change. Some cars may not even have a driving wheel in
the future. The passenger will just come in, enter their destination either
through a keypad or voice interface and relax while the car drives them.
Several Companies that include Tesla and Waymo are working hard to ensure
autonomous vehicles become a thing. Do you think that will be the end of
driving licenses? Well, I guess they will still be there but not as popular as
they are today with kids turning 16 looking to acquire one. There is also going
to be a shift from gasoline powered cars to electric vehicles. Elon Musk
estimates that all modes of transportation are likely to go electric save for
rockets used for space travel. Still on Elon, he recently proposed a transportation
system that uses SpaceX rockets to travel to any part of the world in under 30
minutes. This system would cut the time required to travel most long distance
trips. Let us not forget about the Hyperloop and the bullet trains that will
connect long-distance cities allowing people to work in one city and live
elsewhere. Traffic will not only be restricted to roads alone. The Boring
company is working on a tunnel network to decongest city traffic on the road by
routing other vehicles through underground tunnel roads.
Workplace
The pandemic has taught us that remote work is possible. In
the future, there is a chance that one can setup a home office and then connect
to their workplace via the internet. As task management and video conferencing
software improves, we may experience a
surge in the adoption of remote work. Digital firms that employ many people
globally are expected to rise, all
thanks to the internet. In factories, humans are likely to see a number of
robots doing risky jobs and possibly work hand in hand with them. The advances
in image recognition, natural language processing and other A.I disciplines could see these robot coworkers
carryout successful conversations with humans at the workplace for example, a
restaurant.
Retail
Buying groceries might not be the same anymore. There is a
chance that after buying items online they can be delivered by autonomous
drones and left in your yard. Companies such as Amazon are already looking into
this technology. KarGo is also active
when it comes to retail items delivery
to customers using autonomous vehicles that can navigate the streets to their
designated drop off point and return back to base safely.
Education
Just like the workplace, tutoring may end up being delivered
online using a full range of technologies. For starters, a video conference call
with screen sharing could enable successful delivery of a lecture. Technical
subjects could be delivered using specialized equipment such as VR headsets and
controllers. An applicable scenario could be a mechanical engineer trying to assemble
and test a machine as part of their assessment with the virtual models of the machine
parts loaded into the VR program along
with a toolbox.
Tourism
Are you saving up for a holiday? In the future, expect to
have a trip to space as an item on your stuff-to-do list. Companies that
include Blue Origin, Virgin Galactic and SpaceX are all showing promise to the
possibility of space tourism. Would it not be interesting if they built a hotel
in space where you can truly experience all things space? It seems impossible
now but there is a possibility in the future.
These are some of the areas that may be impacted and in consequence alter our lifestyle. Do you have more? Share with me your ideas in the comments.
